Just because you have health insurance, don’t think that that saves you. While costs for procedures and medications may be covered, what you’re not being told is that because of the type of insurance you have, you become less of a priority. Less priority for preventative testing, less priority for further examination once something is found, less important to the overall care in your treatment. While some doctors actually do give a damn about their patients, the majority see a dollar sign. Let’s stretch out a few extra office visits so we can bill that insurance for $400 every time you walk in for a follow up. Let’s drag out extra procedures so there’s extra office visits for those follow ups. When I’ve told people the runaround I’ve gotten with my medical care, it very much sounds like I’m almost exaggerating the entire thing.
If you’ve watched my previous episodes, you’ll remember that a new and suspicious lymph node was found all the way back in March. With a CT scan follow up in April, but no biopsy. I predicted then, that this would get dragged out as long as humanly (as the laws would limit any type of lawsuit, basically) possible. With my entire medical history to this point, it’s crucial that every thing is closely monitored, and even the tiniest suspicion be examined. That was not the case here, as for months I’ve received nothing but phone calls not being returned, medical records refusing to be transferred, all to find out… well. I snapped. I’ve had it with this bullSHIT.
As patients of any kind of serious illness, you need to be 250% proactive in your own care. Ask questions, demand answers. If something doesn’t feel right, ask more questions, get second opinions. You only have ONE life, if you trust the wrong people to keep you breathing, the stakes could be high.
